An American amateur botanist, Joel Roberts Poinsett, traveled to Mexico in 1828, where he would find the plant. He was so impressed by the plant he sent cuttings back to his plantation in South Carolina. The plant was shared with botanical gardens and growers across the United States and was soon renamed Poinsettias, after Joel Roberts Poinsett.

Paul Ecke, a florist, made poinsettias extremely popular. He lived in California and discovered a technique that caused seedlings to branch, which made a fuller plant. He then grew the plant during the holidays when other flowers were scarce.
