Important Market Update 10/12/2022

Due to record-high temperatures, flooding, extreme weather, diseases, fungus, and pest infestation, all lettuce markets will be severely impacted over the next few weeks. This includes, romaine, iceberg, gem, and more varieties. Higher temperatures are causing tip burn, rib blight, oxidation (pinking), molding, and disease. 

Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV) has drastically increased and completely taken over crops all across the Salinas Valley. This has caused severe shortages. and has forced some growers to enter fields weeks early to minimize crop loss, resulting in lighter carton weights.

These conditions are expected to worsen through the month of October, so markets will see fair quality, extremely limited supplies, and record-high prices. Substitutions for these products are available - spinach, kale, and hydroponic lettuces. Contact your sales rep with any questions, concerns, or for help with finding the best substitution for you.
